TSB signs up to TUC’s Dying to Work Charter

11th December 2018

Today, TSB has signed up to become a signatory of the Dying to Work charter.

The Dying to Work charter is a voluntary charter which was developed by trade union body the TUC and forms part of a wider campaign to improve job security for employees living with terminal illness.

It encourages employers to recognise the important role that work can have, and asks them to:

  • Recognise that those with a terminal illness need support and understanding and not additional and avoidable stress.
  • Support staff following their diagnosis and recognise that safe and reasonable work can help maintain dignity, offer a distraction and can be therapeutic.
  • Provide staff with the security of work and the right to choose the best course of action for themselves and their families, without undue financial loss.
  • Support the TUC’s Dying to Work campaign, so that all employees with terminal illness have adequate employment protection and protection for their death in service benefits.

Rachel Lock, HR Director at TSB said:

“I am delighted we have signed up to the Charter.

“Supporting our Partners through all stages in their lives has always been really important to us and this move is further evidence of that”

To sign up to the charter, it needs to be endorsed by a TUC member – which Unite and Accord were very happy to do.

Ged Nichols, General Secretary for Accord said:

“We’re really pleased that TSB agreed to join us in signing this significant Charter. The Charter is an important part of Accord’s wider Dignity at Work agenda.”

Dominic Hook, National Officer for Unite’s Finance sector, added:

“Worrying about your job should be the least of your concerns when you receive a terminal diagnosis. Signing the TUC’s Dying to Work charter is an important step in a moral journey; this campaign is a really important part of changing the way society approaches and thinks about terminally ill people.”
