TSB launches Face ID for mobile banking

9th November 2017

TSB customers will be among the first in Europe to use facial recognition technology, Face ID, to unlock their TSB mobile banking app and make payments.

The new facial authentication technology exclusive to Apple’s iPhone X will add further security and convenience for the increasing number of TSB customers banking on their smartphones.

Carlos Abarca, TSB’s Chief Information Officer, says: “This is the ultimate mobile banking experience for people that want instant access to their banking.  Providing customers with biometrics logon to their mobile banking, such as Face ID, means all of those passwords and memorable information become a thing of the past.”

“Digital solutions like this are playing a major role in the everyday lives of our customers – something that will not slow down and we’re excited to be at the forefront of the new technology.”

The innovative move by TSB comes just weeks after it launched Samsung Pass iris recognition for its customers, which was built on its new Proteo4UK IT banking platform.  TSB is building a bank fit for the 21st century, with digital at its heart.

Carlos continues: “Our customers are increasingly demanding a greater user experience and we are constantly innovating to deliver this.  Our new banking platform, Proteo4UK, allows us to accelerate TSB’s ability to make banking better for all UK customers.  Introducing solutions such as Apple Face ID to our mobile app is just another example of what we can now deliver.”

Notes to editors

TSB was built to bring more competition to UK banking and ultimately make banking better for all UK consumers.  TSB only serves local customers and local businesses, to help fuel local economies, because communities thriving across Britain is a good thing for all of us.

We have a simple, straightforward and transparent banking model and make clear on our website how we operate and make money.  We offer the products and services people tell us they want, with none of the funny stuff people normally associate with traditional banks.

Our five million customers appear to notice: TSB is Britain’s most recommended high street bank and was recently identified as one of the top 10 big companies to work for.
