Save every day in 2021

25th January 2021

Whether you’re saving for a new car, a house deposit, or building up a rainy day fund, putting money away is a healthy habit.

But at the start of a new year, many of us set overly ambitious targets, which mean we are more likely to quit if we can’t meet them.

Pledge to save £200 a month, and saving £100 can feel like a failure.

So here is how one small, easy and achievable action in your everyday life will help you build a savings habit that will last into 2022 and beyond.

Automate your savings

If building a daily savings habit sounds like a challenge, there is good news.

These days technology will do it all for you.

Many bank accounts will round up card payments to the nearest pound, and automatically transfer the difference into a savings account.

For example, if your supermarket bill is £52.37, £53 will be debited from your account, with 63p going into a savings pot.

Once you have signed up, it requires no further effort from you, and you won’t really notice the money leaving your account. If you think about how many times you use your card every month, the savings will soon add up.

Letting technology do the work means you can reap the benefits of a daily savings habit without having to make a daily effort.
