How to close your account

Before you close your account, why not see if one of our other current accounts suits you better? With our Spend & Save account you can earn earn £5 Cashback per calendar month for six months, including the month you open the account.

You can close your account by completing the Online Account Closure Form (if you have a passport of photo driving licence) or by downloading and sending the form back to us at the postal address below.

Before you close your account

We can only close your account when:

  • Your account is not overdrawn – we are unable to close your account if it is in a negative balance.

  • You have no outstanding charges and/or pending transactions due on the account - please make sure there is enough money in your account to cover these, we can only close your account when all pending transactions have been debited.

If there are any standing orders or direct debits on the account, they will be cancelled. If you have any standing orders or direct debits going to the account you are closing, you need to cancel or redirect these to ensure you don’t incur any charges.

Transferring your balance when closing your account

There are three ways you can transfer your balance when closing your account using our Online Account Closure Form:

  1. Transfer to another TSB account

  2. Make a payment to an account with a different UK provider

  3. Make an international payment

Please note if you are making an international payment, the following rules will apply:

  • All international payments will be sent in Sterling (GBP)

  • There are fees to transfer internationally. Find out more information.

  • If your balance is less than £50, we will issue a cheque in Sterling (GBP)

What happens to my Pay a Contact registration if I close my TSB registered account?

If you close your registered account, you will automatically be de-registered for Pay a Contact.

We'll send you a notification message (SMS) confirming you are no longer registered for Pay a Contact.

Will you let me know when my account is closed?

We’ll write to confirm that we’ve closed your account, normally within two weeks of your account closing.

Transferring your balance when closing your account

There are three ways you can transfer your balance when closing your account using our Online Account Closure Form:

  1. If you want more payment options, transfer your balance to a TSB current account, if you have one. Then complete an international payment or transfer to another UK bank
  2. Make a payment to an account with a different UK provider.
This will be processed by:
  • Faster Payments, if your account allows and your balance is under £10k
  • If not, this will be done by CHAPs
If you do not want to transfer via these options, we will send you a cheque in Sterling (GBP).

If I close my Monthly Saver, can I open another one?

You cannot open another Monthly Saver until the first anniversary of the date you opened the previous Monthly Saver.

If I close my TSB Cash ISA, can I open another one?

You can close any of your Cash ISAs at any time. But please remember:

  • Withdrawals from a Fixed Rate Cash ISA are usually subject to a charge. However, if you need to access your savings as a result of impacts caused by the coronavirus, please use the online form or postal form to close your account and we will waive any charges.
  • If you’ve paid money into your account in this tax year and then close your account, you won’t be able to open a new cash ISA with another provider in the same tax year.
  • If you’ve taken more money out of your TSB Cash ISA than the amount you’ve paid into your TSB Cash ISA in that tax year, and you don’t pay it back in before you close your TSB Cash ISA, you won’t be able to replace this in a new or existing ISA with another provider. This means that you won’t be able to save as much money tax free.

Can I close my Junior Cash ISA?

Only the Registered Contact can close the Junior Cash ISA account. The account can’t be closed, unless the money in the account is transferred to another Junior ISA.

Can I close my Fixed Bond during the term of the account?

Customers are not usually permitted to close Fixed Bonds before the end of the term. However, if you need to access your savings as a result of impacts caused by the coronavirus, please use the online form or postal form to close your Bond.

You can close your credit card account by calling us on 0345 835 3846 between 8am - 8pm Monday to Sunday, going into your nearest branch or by writing to us.

Please have your card details to hand if contacting us by telephone.

In branch, you’ll need to take your credit card and some identification with you.

If you want to write to us you will need to include your name, current address, last 4 digits from your card number and signature and send to:

Please be aware of the following if you are closing your credit card account:

  • The account can be closed with a balance that can then be repaid. You need to continue to make at least minimum payments towards any remaining balance on the card. Remember if you only pay the minimum each month it’ll take you longer and cost you more to repay.
  • Any balance that you do have will be subject to the same standard interest rate(s) that you have now. This will not change.
  • If you have any regular payments setup on this account, for example, for digital TV services or magazine subscriptions, you will need to contact the providers directly either to confirm that you no longer want the service, or to arrange an alternative payment method with them.
  • You will no longer be able to use your card, please destroy it securely by cutting through the chip.
  • Your credit card will remain viewable in Internet Banking whilst there is a balance on the card. If the account is closed with a balance of zero then the account will be removed from Internet Banking overnight. Please keep any historic statements you may want from Internet Banking before you ask us to close your account.
  • If any pending transactions post to your account it will reappear in Internet Banking and you will need to continue to make at least minimum payments towards the remaining balance on the card.
  • Finally, if you change your mind in the future you can always get in touch with us to open a new credit card. But this won’t be possible until your account has been closed for six months with a zero balance.
