If you have a card with a contactless symbol, you can pay for small items £30 and under, just by touching your card on a shop's contactless reader.

What is contactless?

Contactless is a fast and easy way to pay for purchases up to £30 without entering a PIN. All you have to do is touch your contactless card onto the contactless reader to make a payment.

How do I get contactless?

We include contactless technology on most of our debit cards - if your card has the contactless symbol, it has contactless built in. If you don't already have a contactless card but would like one, just visit your nearest branch who'll be able to help you. Please be aware that contactless cards are not available to everyone (contactless eligibility is subject to status).

Please note: if you have a brand new or replacement contactless card, you'll need to use your card with your PIN before the contactless function will work. This can either be an ATM transaction or purchasing an item in store. This is a security feature to make sure that no-one else has got hold of your card.

Where can I use contactless?

You can use it in any newsagent, shop or cafe displaying the contactless symbol and when you travel by bus or tube in London.

How do I use contactless?

It's very simple to use contactless, just tap your card onto the reader and wait for the green light or the beep to confirm your payment. No need to wait for a card receipt and no need to put in a PIN number.

How many times a day can I use contactless?

You can use it as many times a day as you want, but every now and then you may be asked to enter your PIN. This is to double-check that it's you who's in possession of your card.

If I have two contactless cards, could both be read simultaneously?

No, if a reader detects more than one card, you'll be asked to select the card you want to use. Or, in some cases, your payment will be cancelled. To ensure this doesn't happen, it's best to touch the card you want to pay with on the reader rather than touching your wallet against the reader.

Can I use contactless to get cash out at an ATM?

No, you can't get cash out of an ATM using contactless.

What is a One-Time Password?

A One-Time Password is for extra security and may be sent to a cardholder’s phone before using certain services in internet banking or when using a Credit or Debit card online, otherwise a payment may not go through.

A Cardholder can check that we have the right phone number through internet banking using the ‘Change details’ option. Or by popping into a branch.

Is contactless safe to use?

Yes, it's as safe as using chip and PIN.

A contactless Visa debit card is subject to status.

Business Contactless Debit Cards FAQs

Yes, don’t worry, your new contactless card will work abroad just like your old card but remember that these may attract a £1 non-sterling purchase fee.

To destroy your ‘old’ card, please make sure you cut the chip with a pair of scissors and cut through the 16-digit card number.

We’re sorry to confuse you by sending you two different cards. Please use your contactless card and once you are happy that it’s working, destroy the ‘contact’ card.

You received a new debit card because we have added contactless functionality, which is a fast and easy way to pay for purchases up to £45 without entering a PIN.

You should use your contactless card as this supersedes your old ‘contact’ card.

We’re sorry you have received a debit card for a business / organisation you are no longer part of. Please contact the Business Banking Team on 0345 835 3858 who will be able to update the account.

If you have a received a card, this means that the account is still open. If you are registered for Telephone Banking, please call 0345 835 3858 to close your account. Alternatively, you can complete an account closure form and send this to us.

Don’t worry, we are sending our new contactless cards out in different stages so each individual will receive their card at a slightly different time. If you still haven’t received your new contactless card by May, please contact the Business Banking team on 0345 835 3858 who will be able to investigate this for you.

We are sorry your new contactless card was sent to an old address. To ensure we hold the most up to date address on our system, we need you to let us know of any changes. If you are registered for Telephone Banking, please call us on 0345 835 3858 and we’ll amend your address. Alternatively, please complete the attached form and send this to us.

Your old ‘contact’ card will stop working as soon as you use your new contactless card. Please destroy your ‘contact’ card and use your new contactless card.
