Make a narrow space look bigger

Have you got a narrow room that you'd struggle to swing a cat in? We get it, but don't worry, the Dulux Amazing Space designers have great top tips on how to make a narrow space look bigger. So whether you're wondering what colour to use, how to maximise your storage, or you'd just like to pick up some tricks to make your room look wider, read on to find out how the experts deal with a long, thin space.

Make light of it

Being a designer is a bit like being a magician sometimes, we use tricks to create the illusion of space using paint and colour. Bright, light colours work really well because they take your attention out towards the walls so they make a room feel bigger. Dulux Morning Light from our Dulux Light + Space range has the perfect finish to create a feeling of spaciousness, it's available in a range of pastel shades to suit your scheme.

When it comes to your furniture it's best to avoid big bulky items if you can as they make a narrow space look smaller. A sleek console table in your entrance hall like this gorgeous green one is ideal.

And simple furniture with slim legs and translucent or transparent pieces will also make your room feel bigger. The glass table below looks so much lighter than a dark, solid desk would.

Off the wall ideas

We all tend to put our biggest items - chunky wardrobes and tall display cabinets - against the wall but there is another way of using your wall space: displaying your proudest possessions or for storage. Just don't put everythingout there or the room will go from light and spacious to crowded and cluttered. See how calm and light the room below is?

The display feature has been cleverly combined with the low storage unit beneath, which stops your eyes from wandering up to the ceiling and makes the room feel much bigger.

If you've got lots of clutter - sorry, prized possessions - one of our favourite tips is to use multipurpose furniture, this bench is perfect for displaying your favourite treasures and photos, and it doubles up as hidden storage for all those photos you don'twant people to see.

Another trick we use to make a room feel wider is to make the long walls seem shorter. For a quick fix, arrange your pictures in a group rather than in a line, this eclectic grouping looks fab on what would otherwise be a long, bare space.

Throw out the rulebook

OK, you've got us, we did mention light and airy earlier on. Now we're saying you can go dark and moody if you want to. That's just the rebel in us!

If you like your rooms deep, dark and atmospheric forget the rules and create an intimate den with a dramatic dark wall feature. This pic shows how easy it is to turn a small bedroom into a cosy sanctuary by painting the bottom half of the walls a dark colour and the upper half in a lighter shade.

A new slant on things

Have you ever noticed how angular patterns make a room seem wider? That's because they emphasise the diagonal - the longest line in the room. This funky rug creates an illusion, making your eyes look deeper into the room rather than focusing on the short walls. We told you we're magicians!

You can also make a space feel bigger by going against the grain and arranging your furniture at an angle rather than lining it up with the wall. It's simple but effective.

All-important finishing touches

Light = space so chuck out your thick curtains and try sheer fabrics in curtains and blinds instead. Or be really brave and leave your windows naked to let in as much light as possible. WARNING: this tip is only applicable to certain rooms in the house.

Having furniture and accessories with reflective surfaces will help to distribute the light in the room too, and the failsafe trick of adding a mirror or two to bounce the light around always works brilliantly.
