Have you had your fill of wintery Christmases? The festive season doesn’t need to be all about blowing your nose and having numb extremities when a four hour flight could see you in your swimsuit, lounging in the sunshine with a cocktail by the sea.

Beaches, brunches, cocktail bars and amazing sights – they’re all here in our ultimate where-is-hot-this-Christmas guide. Trips like this need not cost a fortune - be canny and look out for those last-minute deals and be one of the only people at work sporting a tan in January. It’s time to break tradition.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
See? You didn’t have to go very far at all. White sand and majestic cliff tops – what’s not to love? Surfing, waterskiing and windsurfing are popular the year round, so get active. A private room in an Airbnb is available for as little as £25 and for an alternative Christmas dinner, visit Antiguo Café del Puerto in Corralejo. Position yourself on the terrace, overlooking the waves, and enjoy their fantastic wine and a menu of over 50 tapas dishes.

Marrakech, Morocco
Be prepared for some cooler nights here, but days should still radiate with warmth and expected highs of 19 degrees. The souks are a fascinating alternative to Christmas markets, so lose yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of some of the many bazaars. Cafe Clock, located in Derb Chtouka, does a slap-up breakfast while also serving unique local fare like camel burgers. Quirky entertainment such as traditional storytelling and live music provide a real buzz.

Montego Bay, Jamaica
For soaring temperatures, cool beaches and unpretentious eating, you can’t go wrong with Jamaica. Pull up a bar stool at Scotchies for some mouth-watering jerk chicken. Snorkel or dive around the exquisite coral reefs or for something different, visit the Green Grotto caves, a labyrinth of mystical underground caverns that are one of Jamaica’s most renowned natural features.

Sydney, Australia
OK - now we’re talking long haul! But if it’s a memorable Christmas you’re after - and you’re ready to treat yourself - get packing. The beautiful beaches of Sydney such as Bronte, Freshwater and Coogee are the real drawcards, so if the cost of a flight is a bit crippling, compensate by scaling back on dining out. Opt for one of the many welcoming pubs, or go for fish and chips and ice cream instead of oysters and champagne. Bondi Beachside YHA prices are around £56 per night.

Quy Nhon, Vietnam
If you’re keen to escape other tourists, this area of Vietnam is beautiful and largely undiscovered. Enjoy delectable seafood, bicycle riding, cooking classes or yoga. The Avani Quy Nhon Resort perfectly combines luxury and tranquillity with Tai Chi, fine dining and a dry sand/salt sauna available to guests. A 15-hour flight from London, it’s by no means a short distance – it really depends how far you’re willing to travel to find your Christmas Zen...
