From 2 August 2017 we’re reducing the maximum amount that we’ll charge you each month for Unplanned Overdraft and Returned Item Fees. What this means is that we’ll never charge you more than £80 in each monthly billing period for the total of all these fees:

To make comparing bank products easier for you, banks are setting a maximum monthly charge for unplanned borrowing fees. Each bank may charge different fees, but all banks are explaining it the same way, with the same wording.

Text alerts are another useful way to keep track of your balance - you can register below and get alerts sent to your mobile when you’re getting close to your limit to help reduce overdraft fees and charges.

You might also find our Control service useful as it’s something that we can put onto your account to help stop you from going into an Unplanned Overdraft. If for any reason you do go into an Unplanned Overdraft, having Control means you won’t be charged Unplanned Overdraft fees or any Returned Item Fees. But we still charge interest on any Unplanned Overdraft balance over £10. The monthly cost of having the Control service is £10. Control is only available on Classic and Classic Plus accounts.
Our Grace Period means that you have until 10pm (UK time) to pay enough money into your account to avoid any Planned and Unplanned Overdraft fees and interest that we may charge that day.
Our Retry Period means that if you don't have enough money in your account to allow us to pay Direct Debits, cheques, standing orders and future dated payments, we'll give you some extra time to pay in money.
A Planned Overdraft is an overdraft up to an agreed limit, which you arrange with us in advance. More information on Planned Overdrafts can be found here

All overdrafts are subject to application and approval and are repayable on demand. This means that we can ask you to repay all or some of your overdraft at any time. How much we lend depends on our assessment of your personal circumstances. You must be 18 or over to have an overdraft.
