If you have a card with a contactless symbol, you can pay for small items £30 and under, just by touching your card on a shop's contactless reader.
Contactless is a fast and easy way to pay for purchases up to £30 without entering a PIN. All you have to do is touch your contactless card onto the contactless reader to make a payment.
We include contactless technology on most of our debit cards - if your card has the contactless symbol, it has contactless built in. If you don't already have a contactless card but would like one, just visit your
nearest branch who'll be able to help you. Please be aware that contactless cards are not available to everyone (contactless eligibility is subject to status).
Please note: if you have a brand new or replacement contactless card, you'll need to use your card with your PIN before the contactless function will work. This can either be an ATM transaction or purchasing an item in store. This is a security feature to make sure that no-one else has got hold of your card.
You can use it in any newsagent, shop or cafe displaying the contactless symbol and when you travel by bus or tube in London.
New and replacement contactless debit cards issued from the 26 January 2016, can be used for contactless transactions abroad. It's important to remember that a £1 non sterling transaction fee and foreign exchange fee of 2.99% still apply under the terms and conditions of a current account. The only exception is that the purchase fee of £1 doesn't apply to Premier and Platinum accounts.
It's very simple to use contactless, just tap your card onto the reader and wait for the green light or the beep to confirm your payment. No need to wait for a card receipt and no need to put in a PIN number.
